About Artist Dorothy Wallace a Fairy & Fantasy Photographer
I have been a professional portrait photographer since 1995 and a fine art photographer for the past 20 years. I specialize in sepia-toned, hand-colored portraits inspired by The Golden Age in photography, illustration and children’s literature.
My passion for photography began with the birth of my children and the desire to connect the past to the present and to preserve the fleeting moments of childhood.
Initially self- taught (when my children were small) in all aspects of B&W photography, I later enrolled in a photography program at a local community college to absorb as much photographic knowledge as I could. It was there that I developed my hand-coloring style and my love for alternative processes. My photographs have been exhibited in numerous galleries and juried exhibitions and have received many awards. In 1990, a portfolio of my work was published in Darkroom Photography magazine in an issue devoted to Women in Photography. More recently , my images have appeared on the cover of Faerie Magazine (Winter 2007) and Somerset Studio’s Life Images magazine (Summer & Fall 2008).
For the past several years I have been photographing faeries. I capture the images on film, then handprint, sepia-tone and (often) hand-color the photographic print. All of my work is shot (outdoors) in available light. I utilize beautiful hand-painted backgrounds, props, clothing & wings created by a group of extremely talented artists. It is a true collaboration.
Today, I live & work (from my home studio) in Claremont, Ca. with my husband & daughter.
My favorite subjects are children, whose ability to suspend disbelief at any given moment lends an air of enchantment, innocence and wonder to my faery portraits.
It is my hope that those who view these images may remember & believe.
