Kathy is a self-taught artist with no formal training; she specialises primarily in watercolour paints, as well as using inks and pencils. Her work has been published in two books, ‘Imagine 2006’ and ‘Faeries through the Seasons’ and more recently, her work has been licensed to merchandising companies for sale all over the world.
Kathy has spent all her life creating art in one form or another. Her first prize was at 7 years old in a school competition, for a picture of Cinderella! She has designed posters for local companies and went on to T-shirt design during the late 80’s. Kathy also ran a handcrafted greeting card company for a time, as well as being commissioned for portraits and calligraphy work. In more recent years however, she has combined her love of folklore and magic with art to create the work you see available today.
Kathy doesn’t feel her art follows any particular style; she loves to create all things faery related, be it sweet faeries in pretty dresses or vivacious, gothic maidens whom you would never catch daintily tiptoeing through the flowerbeds! She prefers to be diverse, and creates art ranging from detailed portrait images to cartoon style characters. Kathy loves Pin-up art, Manga and Comic Book art, and has created a series of faery characters based upon these themes...... a wonderful excuse to incorporate wild hair, burlesque style figures and cheeky costumes!
Inspiration comes from literally everywhere; books, films, music, dreams and nature; the woodlands and the elements - as well as her Pagan beliefs and love of all things mythological and magical. Her greatest influences are from other artists, as well as encouragement from fellow artist friends who all support each other in various internet forums and galleries.
A concept sketch usually takes a couple of hours to complete; sometimes longer. The character is sketched out in rough and all the costumes, hair etc is perfected as much as possible before it is transferred to watercolour paper ready for painting. Kathy prefers to use Windsor and Newton Watercolour paints on smooth, cold pressed, watercolour paper. Kathy rarely works on any piece larger than 8 x 12 inches and producing fine detailed work on such a small scale is a real challenge. A completed painting may take anything from a few full days to a couple of weeks to finish, depending on how much detail and background, features in the piece.
As well as producing faery artwork, Kathy has also produced handcrafted faery gifts, including charms, wishing pouches and greeting cards. Her tiny faery-baby, mermaid, and dragon figures which ‘live’ in jars within a minature woodland scene, are painstakingly created by hand, without the use of any molds. These can take over two hours each, for a faery baby measuring just one inch in length. No two are ever exactly the same and unique names are even given to each and every creature, to make them more special to own.
Kathy also custom makes Faery tiaras and decorative wands, using crystals, beads, flowers and ribbons, for those grown-up Faery Princesses amongst you!
